We like to think of our homes as sanctuaries and safe places. However, with falls being a leading cause of injuries among those aged 65 and older and 77% of indoor falls occurring within our own homes, that’s not always the case. It’s never too soon to make your older loved ones’ homes safe.
The first thing you’ll want to do is to declutter and organize. We know, we know, of course a professional organizer would say that. But it’s true – removing clutter from floors and storing items strategically makes a big difference. Throw rugs, furniture placed too closely together, electrical cords, and baskets of craft projects can be trip hazards. Items stored on high shelves are equally dangerous. Arrange your space so that frequently used items are stored at accessible heights and set furniture to make a clear path for navigating. Remove slippery rugs and hard-to-see items from the floor.
Once your organizing work is underway, use these tips to further safeguard the home:
- Lighting: Ensure adequate lighting throughout the home, especially in hallways, staircases, and bathrooms. Install nightlights and motion sensors.
- Home Monitoring: Install smart home technology and/or security cameras for emergency alerts and monitoring.
- Bathroom: Install nonslip strips and a seat in the tub. Install grab bars in the shower and near the toilet.
- Bedroom: Set the bed at a comfortable height for getting in and out. Consider installing bed rails.
- Fire and CO Safety: Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors regularly and have easy access to fire extinguishers.
- Outdoors: Check walkways for cracks and dips. Place solar lights along paths.
- Stairways: Install handrails on both sides. Mark the top and bottom steps with colored tape or paint to make them easier to see.
- Hot Water: Set water heaters to no more than 120 degrees to prevent burns.
Taking these steps will go a long way to ensuring safety and peace of mind. If you find that your needs exceed safety proofing an existing home and a move to an assisted living residence is the best option, Hither Hive can help you make that transition smoothly.
