We hope you all had a wonderful summer, full of sunny days and ocean breezes!
Summer might be ephemeral, but the memories last a lifetime. Our clothes and beach items fall somewhere in between, depending on how we care for them.
Here are some easy, practical tips for storing summer clothing and beach items so they’re ready for next year:
1. Clothing
- Wash before storing – sunscreen, sweat, and saltwater can damage fabrics if left unwashed.
- Choose breathable storage – use cotton or canvas garment bags or bins with ventilation. Avoid airtight plastic if storing natural fibers (like cotton or linen) to prevent mustiness.
- Fold vs. hang – fold t-shirts, shorts, and swimwear. Hang delicate sundresses or linen suits on padded hangers.
- Use acid-free tissue – place between delicate fabrics to prevent yellowing.
- Store by category – keep swimsuits in one labeled bag, cover-ups in another, etc., for easy retrieval next year.
2. Footwear & Accessories
- Sandals/flip-flops – wash and dry completely before storing. Use clear bins or fabric shoe bags.
- Beach hats – stuff crowns with tissue to keep shape and store in a box.
- Sunglasses – store in cases to prevent scratches. Keep them all together in a small bin or drawer organizer.
3. Beach Gear
- Towels & blankets – wash, fully dry, then roll tightly to save space. Store in a bin with cedar sachets to prevent odors.
- Beach bags – empty completely (check for sand!) and fold flat inside one another.
- Snorkels, fins, goggles – rinse with fresh water, dry, and store in mesh bags.
- Beach chairs & umbrellas – rinse off sand and salt, let dry, then cover with storage bags or old sheets to prevent dust.
If you follow these tips, your future self will thank you!
