It is no surprise that dads consistently cite time spent together as the number one thing they desire on Father’s Day. If your dad or grandfather resides in an assisted living residence, space is at a premium. A physical gift may create clutter. There is no greater present to a father than simply being with his children and family.
Here are some creative ideas to make your Father’s Day visit memorable:
· Write him a heartfelt letter or, if you are lyrically inclined, a poem to express how much he means to you.
o Print with large font or write clearly.
o If he has difficulty reading, recite the letter out loud.
o Include some of his favorite memories.
· Set up a virtual gathering. This is an especially good idea for family who are not local.
o Invite family and close friends to a video call.
o Suggest conversation prompts in advance, such as “funniest memory of Dad,” or “an important skill or lesson Dad taught me.”
o Play the game “3 Truths and a Lie,” but make each statement a story about your dad.
· Movie Marathon
o Research where your dad’s favorite movies and TV shows are streaming and create your own movie night or weekend film festival.
o Hunker down with his favorite snacks and watch the programs together.
· Music Playlists
o Set up a playlist of your dad’s favorite songs and artists and maybe throw in some current hits you think he’d like.
o If he is not tech savvy, create instructions or shortcuts to access this list when you aren’t around.
o Spend some time listening to music together and singing along and/or dancing.
· Take me IN to the Ballgame
o Decorate his living space with his home team’s banners.
o Find a game playing live on TV or stream a recently recorded ballgame.
o Share ballpark-themed foods, like pretzels, peanuts or popcorn.
o Invite neighbors to join in the fun.
However you celebrate, we hope you and your family have a wonderful Father’s Day!
